Sri Lanka vs South Africa ODI Series 2014 Schedule


The South Africans were scheduled to play a three match One Day International series in their tour of Sri Lanka. The South Africans have been in the recent days the best teams in the cricketing field but thy have never ever won an ODI series in Sri Lanka. Thus beating the Lankans in their den is one of the tasks that this team has failed to achieve. The series had all the ingredients for it being one of the well fought one as both the teams have some great players in the squad.

The first match of the series saw the visitors bat first after winning the toss. The South African openers provided a good start to the innings. Both the batsman had a 50 run partnership between them. Quinton de Kock after scoring 27 runs lost his wicket to Angelo Mathews. Jacques Kallis failed to score a single run. It was captain AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla who took the team to a great score of 211 in 36th over. It was in this over when AB de Villiers after scoring 75 runs lost his wicket and later David Miller, Jean-Paul Duminy and Ryan McLaren helped Amla to take their team to a score of 304 at the end of 50 overs. Amla scored 109 runs before losing his wicket in the 42nd over. The Sri Lankans in the chase started off well scoring 98 runs in just 17 overs, but lost both the openers. Kumar Sangakkara was the top scorer in the innings as he managed to score 88 runs. Middle order collapsed and thus the home team lost the match. Imran Tahir from South Africa and Ajantha Mendis from Sri Lanka both took 3 wickets in the match.

The second match saw the Sri Lankans bat first in the match.  Tillakaratne Dilshan was the top scorer in the innings scoring 86 runs. The middle order batsman got some great starts and after reaching 30’s they all lost their way. Thus the home team managed to put up a score of 267 runs. Ryan McLaren was the bowler who made the difference as he took 4 wickets in the match giving away 48 runs. The visitors batting line up collapsed badly in this innings. Only Hashim Amla was the player for the team who yet again played a century run innings. He scored 101 runs in the match where the whole team scored only 180 runs. Lasith Malinga was the best bowler who disrupted the innings of the visitors taking 4 wickets. With this win the series was at level 1-1.

The 3rd and the last match of the series saw the visitors batting first. They got a great start to their innings as Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock managed to give their team a 100 run stand for the 1t wicket. Later Ab de Villiers and Kock took the team’s innings to some great heights. Both of them played a century run innings. Kock scored 128 runs while de Villiers scored 108 runs in the match taking his team to a score of 339 in 50 overs. Sri Lankan innings was a story of failed starts as the entire batsman managed to get a start to their innings but reaching the score of 30’s they failed to go ahead in the innings. Angelo Mathews was the top scorer scoring 58 runs but his efforts went in vain and the team was all-out in the 44th over of the game at a score of 257. The Sri Lankan lost the match by 82 runs and along with the match they also lost the series.

The South Africans successfully managed to win their first series in the island country of Sri Lanka. Hashim Amla for his run feast won the man of the series award.
