England vs Sri Lanka Test Series 2014 Schedule


Sri Lanka end the England’s tour of 2014 with a test win - The Sri Lanka’s long tour of England ended on a high as they finish the test series with a win. In the second and the last test match of the tour Sri Lanka managed to put up a great fight back and register a victory in the match thus winning the series by 1-0. With this series win the team has managed to win all the international series of the tour. Before the start of the test series it was believed that the test would not be an even affair as the visiting team struggled under the wet conditions. But to everyone’s surprise the Lankan tigers played both the test match of the series with some great spirit. Both the test matches lasted till the last ball of the game and both had a nail biting end to the game.

The first test match of the series was played in the historic stadium of Lord’s. It was a match which saw many swings of fortune for both the teams. Batting first England scored a massive first innings total of 575. Joe Root was the hero as he scored a double century to take his team to a total from where they were in control of the game. He was well helped on by Matt Prior. These two batsmen saved the game for the home side as Sri Lanka managed to take some quick early wickets at the start of the match. Nuwan Pradeep was the star bowler for the visitors as he took 4 wickets. Shaminda Eranga chose the occasion to rise and he took 3 wickets in the first innings. The Sri Lankan batting replied strongly as Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews both scored centuries to take their team to a score of 453. Chris Jordan and James Anderson took 3 wickets each for the team. In the second innings Gary Ballance was the man for the home side as he scored 104 taking his team to a second innings total of 267. Rangana Herath took 4 wickets while Eranga also took 3 wickets in the innings. Sri Lanka while chasing a score of 390 had a great start as Sangakkara and Kaushal Silva provided a foundation. But the visitors could not make the best of this strong foundation and lost wickets pretty early. Thus the team scored 201/9 thus the match ended up in a draw. Anderson took 4 wickets in the innings.

The second and the all important test match saw the home side balling first. The visitors were bowled out at a score of 257 failing to survive the whole day. Sangakkara was yet again the top scorer for the team scoring 79 runs. Liam Plunkett on the other hand took 5 wickets in the innings. Batting in the 1st innings England took a lead of 100 runs thanks to the century from Sam Robson. Eranga and Angelo Mathews took 4 wickets each in the innings. The visitors yet again put up a brave show in the second innings scoring a massive score of 457 thus setting a target of 350 runs for the home side. Angelo Mathews was the star with the bat as he scored 160 runs. Plunkett yet again was the star with the bowler taking 4 wickets. While chasing the English side faulted and lost wickets early leaving the team to a total of 57/5. It was the debutant Moeen Ali who managed to score a century on the last day and tried to avoid the loss. But all his work went in vain as eventually the home side lost the match. Dhammika Prasad
took 5 wickets in the innings to win the match and the series for his team. Angelo Mathews and James Anderson was given the man of the series award. Sangakkara was the top scorer of the series scoring 342 runs. This was a series that will be remembered for the rise of young players.
