IPL Final Scorecard List: Date & Qualifying Teams

Cricket is one of the celebrated sports worldwide, especially in India. IPL (Indian Premier League) is a professional 20-20 Cricket league played in India. It is one of the notable times for Indians as they enjoy it like a festival. Usually, it is contested from March to May between 8 teams representing eight different cities of the country. IPL was initiated by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and was launched in 2008.

IPL is one of the cricket leagues recorded for the most-attended cricket league in the world in 2014. Moreover, it was ranked among the top 10 attendance in all sports leagues in the same year. It was the first sports event that was broadcasted live on YouTube. Recently it was also broadcasted on Hotstar.

According to Duff & Phelps, the brand value for IPL recorded in 2019 was estimated to be around $6.7 billion. Not only that, according to BCCI, the 8th season of IPL, played in 2015, contributed approximately $160 million to the Indian economy and helped in elevation of GDP.

From 2008 to 2024, there have been 17 seasons of IPL played, out of which the most IPL titleholder has been Mumbai Indians and now Chennai Super Kings (who are the current titleholder also).

Final holds importance in each season as it declares the ultimate winner of the season and concludes the particular season. The IPL winning team and individual players are rewarded with several honours to appreciate their marvellous performance throughout the season. Such as:

  • Orange cap:- It is given to the highest runs scorer in IPL in the particular season.
  • Purple cap:- It is given to most wicket taker in the IPL in any particular season.
  • Maximum Sixes award:- As suggested by the title, it is presented to the batsmen who hit the maximum sixes in IPL in any particular season.
  • Most Valuable Player:- This award of Most Valuable Player was introduced in 2013. It is given to the leader who has given his best for his team throughout the season.
  • Player of Match:- This award is given at the end of every match to the Player, who has performed brilliantly throughout that match.
  • Emerging Player of the year:- This award has evolved throughout the years and got its name in 2014. It is presented to the best young player of that season.
  • Fair Play Award: After each match, every Umpire gives each team specific points based on their performance. The maximum points for a team are 2, and the least is 0, which indicates good or bad performance, respectively. Every team with the highest point is given the title of Fair play award.

This article will briefly shower the light on finale matches and their outcomes in each season of IPL till now.

IPL 2008 Final - Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings

It was the first edition of IPL (Indian Premier League), in which eight teams contested against each other. The final match was played on 1st June 2008 between Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai super kings. In this 20 over the game, Rajasthan Royals had won by three wickets by chasing a score of 163 made by Chennai super kings. It was played in DY Patil Stadium Navi Mumbai. Shane Warne had led the winning team towards victory.

In comparison, the Player of the series for that season was Shane Watson of Rajasthan Royals. The Player of the match was Yusuf Pathan from Rajasthan Royals. On the commencement, the Royals had won the toss and elected to field first. It was a night match in which the Kings had lost five wickets and had given a target of 163. The Royals had achieved this target with a loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. This match was a neck to neck competition that took away spectators' breath till the last, decision-making ball.    

IPL 2009 Final - RCB vs Deccan Charges

This jaw-dropping match was played 24th May 2009 at Johannesburg, Wanderers stadium in South Africa. It was the only time in which South Africa hosted the tournament. The game was between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, led by Adam Gilchrist and Anil Kumble. The titleholder for this season was Deccan Chargers. Also, Adam Gilchrist was presented as the Player of the season, and Anil Kumble of RCB was given the title of Player of the Match.

In this day/night match, the luck favoured RCB, who won the toss and elected to field first. But, the Chargers had won the game after defending a score of 143 by six runs. It was an entertaining match in which Challengers made 137 with the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. The season stars were R. P. Singh and Mathew Hayden of Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings, respectively, who were awarded the Purple and Orange cap for the season.

IPL 2010 Final - Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians

The third season's final date marked the emergence of the Kings (Chennai Super Kings), led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni against Mumbai Indians, led by Master-Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. The cut-throat competitive match was a furious match in which CSK had bagged the title by defending a score of 168 with a loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs by 22 runs. In contrast, Mumbai Indians were able to make a score of 146 with a loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs, on 25th April 2010.

The best performer of the day was Suresh Raina of CSK, while Sachin Tendulkar was awarded as the Player of the season. In this night match, the luck started favour CSK as had they won the toss and elected to bat first. Such a whopping score was able to give the first victory to Chennai Super Kings.

The other recognition awards of orange and purple caps were presented to Sachin Tendulkar and Pragyan Ojha of Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers. Also, the Under-23 Success of the tournament award was given to Saurabh Tiwary of Mumbai Indians.

IPL 2011 Final - CSK vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

In the fourth season of IPL, the titleholders, Chennai Super Kings, retained their title against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 28th May 2011. The kings were able to defend their score of 205 by 58 runs against the DL Vettori led team. MS Dhoni had led the team to stop the challengers at 148 and take eight wickets in total. In contrast, the kings made their score for five wickets.

This final match was played at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The terrain of homeland indeed favoured the Kings' team as the man of that match was Murali Vijay of Chennai Super Kings. Moreover, the Player of the season was Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle. In this night's game, CSK had elected to bat first as they had won the toss.

The other recognition awards of Orange and Purple cap were presented to Chris Gayle and Lasith Malinga of RCB and MI. Also, Lasith Malinga was the one to hit the maximum number of sixes in the whole tournament.

IPL 2012 Final - CSK vs Kolkata Knight Riders

This fifth season did not favour Chennai Super Kings as they had lost this season against the strong team of Kolkata Knight Riders. This final match was played on 27th May 2012 at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. In this season as well, the toss had favoured CSK, where they elected to bat again. But, this season was ruled by the Knights as they were able to chase the score of 190 and make 192 with a loss of 5 wickets and two balls left in hand against the then titleholders.

CSK, on the day of final, was able to make the score with a loss of 3 wickets in 20 overs. The Knights had ruled in 2012 as both Player of the match and the season were from this team, Manvinder Bisla, and Sunil Narine, respectively. While the other recognizing awards of Orange and Purple cap were given to Chris Gayle, Morne Morkle from RCB, and Delhi Daredevils, respectively. The triumphant victory of KKR was on the shoulders of Sunil Philip Narine, who had also won the MVP award for the season.

IPL 2013 Final - Mumbai Indians vs CSK

The sixth season unfolded the current champions, Mumbai Indians, who were able to defend their score of 148 with a loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs by 23 runs against Chennai super kings. This night match was played on 26th may 2013 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, where Mumbai Indians had won the toss and elected to bat first.

2013 was the kick start year for Rohit Sharma had led Mumbai Indians. MS. Dhoni had captained the team of Chennai Super Kings. The Player of the match was awarded to Kieron Pollard of Mumbai Indians, while the Player of the season was awarded to Shane Watson of Rajasthan Royals. In this match, CSK had made 125 runs with a loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs.

Chris Gayle of RCB had hit the maximum number of sixes, and Shane Watson of RR was named the season's MVP.

IPL Final 2014 - KKR vs Kings XI Punjab

In the unexpected seventh season there was a good fight between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings 11 Punjab in the final match. In this match, the Knights were able to chase a score of 199 made by Kings Eleven Punjab with three balls in hand and with the loss of 7 wickets. The night match was played on 1st June 2014 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. The team of Kolkata Knight Riders was favoured by luck as they had won the toss and elected to field first.

The Player of the match for this season was from Kolkata Knight Riders that was Manish Pandey, and the Player of this series was of the opponent team Kings Eleven Punjab, Glenn Maxwell. In this match, Manish Pandey had made a whopping score of 94 runs in 50 balls to ensure the team's victory. Australian Cricketer Glenn James Maxwell had hit the maximum number of sixes.

IPL Final 2015 - CSK vs MI

The story repeated itself on 24th May 2015 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The Mumbai Indians had won for the second time against Chennai Super Kings. In this final match, Mumbai Indians had won by 41 runs by making a score of 202 for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs. That year, Rohit Sharma had led Mumbai Indians to victory and won the title of Player of the Match.

The Chennai Super Kings had made a score of 161 for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The Player of the 2015 Pepsi Indian Premier League was Andre Russell of Kolkata Knight Riders, while the one who had hit the maximum number of sixes was Chris Gayle of Royal Challengers Bangalore, David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad had won the Orange cap while Dwayne Bravo of Chennai Super Kings had won the Purple Cap. Moreover, that year Shreyas Iyer of Delhi Capitals had bagged the Emerging Player award of the year.

IPL 2016 Final - RCB vs SRH

The Sunrisers Hyderabad had won the 2016 Indian Premier League against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Sunrisers had scored 208 for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs and had won by eight runs. This match was played at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on the night of 29th May 2016.  The Royal Challengers Bangalore team had scored 200 for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. The team was by Virat Kohli.

The champions of that season were under the captaincy of David Warner. Although the Player of the match was Ben Cutting of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the tournament was overpowered by Virat Kohli of RCB, who was presented with the title of Player of the series. In this match, Sunrisers Hyderabad had won the game after winning the toss. The captain had elected to bat first. In 2016 IPL Virat Kohli had bagged the Maximum sixes award and even Most Valuable Player of the season with an Orange cap.

IPL 2017 Final - Rising Pune Supergiants vs Mumbai Indians

On the 10th anniversary of IPL, Mumbai Indians had won the match that was played against Rising Pune Supergiants by one run. The cut-throat competition was played for all 40 overs in which Mumbai Indians had made 129 for the loss of eight wickets while Rising Pune Supergiant had scored 128  at the loss of 6 wickets. The winning team also had won the toss and elected to bat first on 21st May 2017 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. Krunal Pandya of Mumbai Indians was awarded Player of the match, while Ben Stokes of Rising Pune Supergiant was the Season's Player. The Orange Cap for the year was given to the Australian Player David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad. At the same time, Bhuvneshwar Kumar of the same team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, was awarded, Purple Cap. The Maximum sixes award was again given to Glen Maxwell of Kings Eleven Punjab after 2014. This year, the emerging Player of the year was Basil Thampi of Gujrat Lions.

IPL Final 2018 - Sunrisers Hyderabad vs CSK

The 2018 IPL final was played on 27th May 2018 at Wankhede Stadium Mumbai. This match was between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings, in which the later had won by eight wickets. Under the Captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni the team had scored 181 for the loss of 2 wickets with nine balls in hand. While Kane Willamson had led the team SRH, he scored 178 in 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets. Sunil Narine of Kolkata Knight Riders was awarded as the Player of the Series, and Shane Watson of Chennai Super Kings was awarded as the Player of the Match. It was a good game between both teams who tried their best to win the title.

In this year, Mumbai Indians were awarded the Fair Play award. Moreover, Rishabh Pant of Delhi Daredevil won the prize for hitting the Maximum number of sixes. The achievement award for Orange and Purple cap was given to Kane Williamson and Andrew Tye of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings Eleven Punjab, respectively.

IPL Final 2019 - CSK vs MI

Final Match of IPL 2019 was played on 12th May at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. The team was led by Rohit Sharma that is Mumbai Indians. It had won the match by one run against Chennai Super Kings led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In this match, Mumbai Indians had scored 149 with a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs, and Chennai Super Kings had scored 156 with a loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. In the night match, Mumbai Indians had won the toss and opted to bat. The Player of the game was awarded to Jasprit Bumrah of Mumbai Indians. Andre Russel of Kolkata Knight Riders had bagged the awards for Man of the tournament and the Player to hit the Maximum number of sixes. This year, David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad was awarded an Orange cap, and Imran Tahir of Chennai Super Kings was awarded, Purple Cap.

IPL Final 2020 - MI vs DC

The final competition of the Indian Premier League 2020 was played between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on Nov 10, 2020. Rohit Sharma was the leader of Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals played under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. The coin was thrown in the air and Delhi capitals won the coin toss and decided to bat first.

Marcus Stoinis and Shikhar Dhawan were sent out to the middle and Trent Boult got the new ball in hand to open the bowling attack. Mumbai Indians got an awesome start as they got the first breakthrough in the very first ball of the match when Boult dismissed Marcus Stoinis for 0. Then Ajinkya Rahane came on the pitch to join Dhawan but he could not stay longer and was sent back by Trent Boult in the 3rd over. Delhi Capitals came under pressure when they again lost another wicket of Dhawan in the 4th over. Once they were 22 for 3, but then Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant handled the situation very well, and contributed 96 runs in pairs for the 4th wicket. Both the batsmen completed their half century, Iyer’s unbeaten 65 and Pant’s 56, helped Delhi to reach a defending total of 156 runs. Trent Boult took 3 wickets, Nathan Coulter-Nile dismissed 2 players and Jayant Yadav got 1 wicket. Mumbai Indian bowlers did well and stopped Delhi at 156 runs.

When the time came to chase the target, Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock came out to the middle and Delhi started with Ravichandran Ashwin. Both the openers played some superb shots and maintained the run rate of over 10 per over in the beginning. Delhi got the first breakthrough in 4.1 overs when Quinton de Kock was caught behind by Pants at the ball of Stoinis. Since Mumbai had already got a good start and the target was not so big, there were some small partnerships with Rohit Sharma that helped them to achieve the target comfortably in 18.4 overs. Rohit Sharma played well and added 68 runs, on the other hand, Ishan Kishan’s knock of 33 off 19 deliveries was crucial also, for their victory.

Mumbai Indians won the IPL 2020 Final by 5 wickets with 8 balls remaining and Trent Boult became the Man of the Match. The Man of the Series was awarded to Jofra Archer who took 20 wickets in the IPL 2020.

In IPL 2020, KL Rahul became the leading scorer with 670 runs, and Kagiso Rabada was the highest wicket taker with 30 wickets. 

IPL 2021 Final Match - CSK vs KKR

The final encounter of the IPL 2021 was fought between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at Dubai (DSC), Oct 15, 2021. Kolkata Knight Riders won the coin toss and invited CSK to bat first. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis came out to the middle and gave a good start to CSK. They played well and built up a 61 opening partnership, CSK lost their first wicket of Ruturaj in 8.1 overs, but Ruturaj had done his job. Then Robin Uthappa along with Faf du Plessis added 63 runs in pairs for the 2nd wicket. Finally, Faf du Plessis’s 88 runs helped CSK to put 192 for 3 in 20 overs.

Then KKR needed 193 runs in order to lift the trophy for the 3rd time. They started well and made 91 runs for the 1st wicket but after the fall of 1st wicket, the entire squad struggled a lot and surrendered in front of CSK bowlers especially, Shardul Thakur who took 3 wickets, Hazlewood and Jadeja also took 2 wickets each. Shubman Gill 51 and Venkatesh Iyer’s 50 runs were wasted as no batsmen after them could perform well and they scored only 165 for 9. CSK won the IPL 2021 Final by 27 runs for the 4th time. Faf du Plessis was awarded Man of the Match in the IPL 2021 Final.
