Delhi Capitals is undoubtedly one of the promising teams of the Indian Premier League. The Delhi-based team is one of the original teams of the IPL and has been a part of the League since its maiden season in 2008. Delhi Capitals was originally known as “Delhi Daredevils” but changed to its current name in 2018 December. The squad is officially titled as “Delhi capitals” from 2019 IPL. The new name of the team refers to the significance of Delhi as the national capital. As per the owners of the team, just as Delhi enjoys being the focal point of attention being the national capital, the Delhi IPL team too aspires to be the ultimate point of all action in the championship. Unfortunately, Delhi Capitals has never been able to lift the IPL trophy and it’s the sole team in League that has never been able to reach the IPL final (Qualifies of IPL Final 2020).

Delhi Capitals is one of the cleanest teams in the IPL and has never been embroiled in any kind of controversy or legal dispute. Former Indian star batsman Virender Sehwag is the lead run-scorer for the Capitals while Amit Mishra is the lead wicket-taker for the team.

At present, top-order Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is the captain of Delhi Capitals. Former iconic Australian player Ricky Ponting is the head coach of the squad and Mohammad Kaif is the assistant coach. James Hopes and Samuel Badree are the fast bowling coach and spin bowling coach respectively.

Past Performance Year-wise

IPL 2008

Delhi Capitals started the maiden season of IPL on a winning note, winning two back-to-back matches against Rajasthan royals as well as Deccan Chargers. But they lost the 3rd match to Kings XI Punjab and won again the following two matches. The next 4 matches ended up in loss for the Delhi team but they bounced back and won 3 matches in the latter half of the group stage which took them to the playoffs. However, they lost to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator round and had to leave the league in the 4th position.

IPL 2009

The second season of the Indian premier League was definitely a significant IPL edition for the Delhi team. It was for the first time the team was able to reach to the topmost rank on the points table. The squad started the season with a change in captaincy and Gautam Gambhir was the newly appointed skipper. The 2009’s Delhi IPL team had some of the best batsmen and bowlers of the world which catapulted the team to the highest rank in the points table easily. They began the season with hat-trick wins against kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Out of the 14 matches played, the team won in 10 of the games. It’s to stress, there were only 2 centuries in 2009 IPL and one of them was scored by Delhi ace batsman AB de Villiers. However, upon reaching the semi-finals, the Delhi team lost to Deccan Chargers and hence could not reach the final.

IPL 2010

The Delhi squad began the 3rd season of the Indian Premier League with a winning stint and won the first two matches against kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. After that, they lost in 3 consecutive matches but bounced back and won 4 matches straight. The wins were followed by losses against Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians. The Delhi team managed to win again in the next match against a much stronger opponent Chennai Super Kings. But lost in the immediate match to Deccan Chargers and could not reach to the semi-finals. Out of the 14 matches played, then won in 7 games and left the League in the 5th position.

IPL 2011

The 2011 IPL season was possibly the worst season for the Delhi team. Consistent poor performances from the team led to a series of losses and the team ended up in the last position on the points table. They started the season with back-to-back losses against Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals. However, they won in their 3rd match against Pune Warriors and again went on to lose out on the next match. The Delhi team won in the 5th match against kings XI but after that there were only series of losses, barring just two more wins. Out of the 14 matches played, the team could only manage to win 4 games.

IPL 2012

The 2012 IPL was another remarkable season for the Delhi team. It was once again back to the top position on the points table after 2009. The Delhi team had to face severe criticisms from several quarters due to their poor performance for two years straight and thus in 2012, they put serious efforts to fortify the team. They made a number of great purchases such as Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene as well as Ross Taylor and those grand names did wonders to bolster the team’s performance. The Delhi squad began the season with a great win against Kolkata Knight Riders in their first match.  They lost out on the second one but went to win 3 consecutive matches after that. Of the 16 matches played, Delhi Daredevils won in 11 of them which secured them the top position on the points table. They reached the Qualifier round but lost to Chennai Super Kings and hence couldn’t reach the final.

IPL 2013

The 2013 edition was not exactly a great year for the Delhi team in the IPL. They started the season with back-to-back sex losses and finally gained a win in the 7th match against Mumbai Indians. Mahela Jayawardene and Virender Sehwag were two of the lead figures which the Delhi team to win their first match in the season. After that, they again lost their next match to Kings XI Punjab. The following two matches were win against Pune Warriors and Kolkata Knight Riders. But, the Delhi team went on to lose on all the matches after that, having won just 3 of the 16 matches played. It was one of the worst years for the Delhi squad and they ended up in the last position on the points table.

IPL 2014

The Delhi squad started the 2014 season with maximum “right-to-match” cards at auction and had a whopping 600 million USD to spend on new players. But, this time too the team could not fare well in the League, commencing with a loss in the first match only. They won the second match though against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, they again lost to Chennai Super Kings as well as Sunrisers Hyderabad. They won the 5th match against Mumbai Indians and it was the last win for the team in the entire season. Of the 14 matches played, the team won in just two of them and ended up in the last place on the points table.

IPL 2015

Delhi Daredevils began their 2015 season with a close match against Chennai Super Kings where they lost the game by just 1 run. They lost out on the second match too against Rajasthan Royals. They finally gained a win with the 3rd and 4th matches against Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad. After that, the Delhi team against lost their 5th match against Kolkata Knight Riders but won in the 6th match against Mumbai Indians. They lost the following match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Out of the 14 matches played, the Delhi team could only manage to win in 5 of them and finished on the 7th position on the points table.

IPL 2016

The 2016 IPL was relatively a better year for the Delhi IPL squad. They released two of the major players that season, including Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Mathews. The team bought many new names in the 9th season, such as Pawan Negi, Sanju Samson, Karun Nair, Chris Morris, Joel Paris and Sam Billings. The team started the season with a loss against Kolkata Knight Riders but went on to win the next 3 matches against KXIP, RCB and MI. They lost again to Gujarat Lions but won against KKR and GL. Out of the 14 matches played, the team could only manage to win 7 of them. Delhi Daredevils finished at the 6th position on the points table and could not make it to the playoffs.

IPL 2017

Delhi Daredevils had a bad start to the 2017 season as they could not have two of their power players, Duminy and De Kock. As a result, they mostly had to depend on a comparatively inexperienced line-up, including Shami, Chris Morris, pat Cummins, Amit Mishram Kagiso Rabada and so on. And of course, there was Zaheer Khan to lead the team. The Delhi squad lost in their first match against RCB but went on to win the next two matches against Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab. After that, they against lost in 5 matches straight and finally got a win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Of the 14 matches played, they won in just 6 of them and finished on the 6th position on the points table.

IPL 2018

The 2018 Indian Premier League was another poor year for the Delhi squad. The team started with a loss in the first match against Rajasthan Royals but won their 2nd match against Mumbai Indians. They again lost the following three matches against KKR, RCB and KXIP. They won the next match against Kolkata Knight Riders but lost out to Chennai Super Kings in the following match. Of the 14 matches played, the Delhi team could only win in 4 of them and finished at the last place on the points table.

IPL 2019

The 12th IPL season was comparatively a far better year for the Delhi squad after a continuous poor spell of 6 years. It was once again the season when the team could make it to the Playoffs. They began the season with a solid win against Mumbai Indians but then lost to CSK in the second match. In the 3rd match, the team won against KKR but lost to Punjab and Hyderabad in the next two matches. However, the team bounced back and managed to win in the next 3 matches. Of the 14 matches played, Delhi Capitals won in 9 of them and secured their berth on the 3rd position on the points table. They won the Eliminator round against Sunrisers Hyderabad but lost to Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier round and hence could not the reach the final. The 2019 IPL was also the first season when the Delhi team started playing in their new title “Delhi Capitals”.

IPL 2020

Though from the beginning of tournament in 2008 this team has not shown much improvement but in the year 2020 tournament it has shown miraculous performance. Almost in every department players have shown great game with determination. Delhi Capitals showed quality performance in IPL 2020. The team was captained by young Shreyas Iyer. The bowling unit of Delhi Capitals was outstanding in IPL 2020. Kagiso Rabada the frontline seam bowler of the team took most wickets in IPL 2020 and won purple cap. Delhi Capitals finished the IPL 2020 season as runners up. They were defeated by Mumbai Indians in the night of finals. Marcus Stoinis was a big positive for Delhi franchise. Marcus Stoinis performed extremely well for Delhi capitals and performed his role brilliantly throughout the tournament. Delhi Capitals won 8 league matches out of 14 and finished the league stage at 2nd position. They lost the 1st qualifier match against Mumbai team but they won the 2nd qualifier match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2020. Delhi played 4 matches against Mumbai team and lost all 4 matches. It was a way improved performance by this new young Delhi team.

Team Captain

Virender Sehwag was the captain of the team in the maiden season of the IPL in 2008. In 2009, Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the captain. On 2011, Virender Sehwag was re-appointed as the skipper and he retained captaincy till the 2012 season as well. The next captain for the team was Mahela Jayawardene for the 2013 IPL. In 2014 IPL, the captain was Kevin Pietersen. In 2015, the team appointed JP Duminy in the role of skipper and Zaheer Khan in 2016. In 2018, there was a change of captain and that time Gautam Gambhir took up the role of the skipper. Shreyas Iyer became the captain of the team in 2019. Rishabh Pant is the current captain of Delhi Capitals.

Team Owner

The Delhi team was originally owned by leading property development giant GMR Group since 2008. But in 2018 March, GMR sold off 50 percent stake to JSW Sports. At present, Delhi Capitals is jointly owned by GMR Group and JSW Sports.

Official Home Venue

The official home venue of Delhi Capitals is Arun Jaitley Stadium which was previously known as Feroz Shah Kotla Ground. It’s one of the largest and oldest international cricket stadiums of the country and has had been the witness to several high-profile matches. The stadium is owned by Delhi District Cricket Association and boasts a capacity of 41,820 people.
