The stadium was founded in the year 1883 with nearly 55,000 spectator capacity. The old stadium is famous for a cauldron-like ambience that is supposedly the best across India. The stadium has hosted 21 ODIs, 30 Test and 21 IPL matches till date. It has been one of the prime venues for all World Cup matches organized in India starting from the year 1987-2011. It’s interesting to note that the highly enthusiastic home support from the stadium has resulted in a fantastic winning sequence for the national team who was invincible for more than 2 decades at the ground.
