England Strike Back hard to level the five match series - After the loss in the 2nd test match India led the 5 test match series by 1-0. On the other hand just after the loss Alastair Cook the England’s captain was under scanner both for his absurd captaincy and his batting performance. The 3rd match played in the Southampton missed the duties of Ishant Sharma the star pacer from India. He missed this match because of injury. The toss was won by England and they decided to bat first.

Day 1
was totally a day made for the home side. After deciding to bat first the home side went off to a good solid start. In the 1st session of the match after losing only 1 wicket they managed to score 78 runs. The big news was that Alastair Cook seemed to enjoy the batting and looked in good touch. The 2nd session of the match was yet again won by the home side as at tea the team was standing firm at 186/1. Cook and Garry Ballance were the two men responsible for taking the team to this solid position. Cook lost his wicket at the score of 95 thus falling short by only 5 runs. The day ended at 247/2 with Ballance at 104.

Day 2 was yet again dominated by England’s batting as Ian Bell and Ballance took charge to the bowlers. Just before lunch Ballance lost his wicket after scoring 156 runs. Later all the scoring was done by Bell and Jos Buttler. Bell played an innings of 167 runs while Buttler scored 85 runs. England finished their 1st innings at 569 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 3 wickets for India. India played 14 overs at the end of the day losing the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. The day ended up with India at 25/1.

Day 3 didn’t start off good for the visitors as they lost both their overnight batsmen in the first session. At lunch the team was standing at 108/3. The 3rd session didn’t bring in good times for the team either as wickets were constantly falling and no player was able to utilise the start they achieved. The day ended for India at 323/8. Ajinkya Rahane and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were the two players who played well. Rahane scored 54 runs while Dhoni played an innings of 50 runs.

India was all out at the start of the day 4 as the innings ended up at 330 runs. James Anderson took 5 wickets in the innings. The England’s 2nd innings saw a determined batting performance yet again. Alastair Cook scored 70 runs in the innings and remained unbeaten till the end. By losing only 4 wickets the team scored 205 runs. Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets and India was to chase a target of 445 runs with a day in hand. The last session of the day saw India bat and yet again it was a dismal batting performance from the top order. The team scored 112 runs in the session but lost 4 wickets during it.

Winning the game was not in question for India it was a story of surviving the last day to save the test. But India failed to survive even a session as Moeen Ali ripped through the Indian side with 6 wickets in the innings thus winning it for England and equalizing the series by 1-1. Man of the match was awarded to James Anderson.
