Sri Lanka vs South Africa Test Series 2014 Schedule


South Africa in the tour of Sri Lanka was scheduled to play a 2 test match series. The home side were fresh from a series win in England and looked a better team. On the other hand the South Africans who had already registered a One Day series win were looking deadly. The 2 match series started off with the declaration of the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene. Just before the start of the series he declared his retirement from test cricket by the end of this year.

The first test match was to be played in the Galle International stadium. After winning the toss the visitors decided to bat first. Dean Elgar the opener from the South African side played a master class knock scoring 103 runs. Faf du Plessis helped Elgar out and he too played a knock of 80 runs. This was the first series for Hashim Amla as the captain of the test squad and he scored only 11 runs only. Jean-Paul Duminy played a great knock lower down the order scoring 100 runs. The team managed to rule 2 days of the test and scored 455 runs. Dilruwan Perera took 4 wickets while Suranga Lakmal took 3 wickets in the innings. The home side on the other hand didn’t play well in the home conditions. Upul Tharanga the opener scored 83 runs while Angelo Mathews was the only player who played well and scored 89 runs. The Sri Lankan innings ended up at 292 runs giving the visitors a commanding lead. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel were the two main bowler for the visitors they took 4 and 3 wickets respectively.

The second innings of the match was even better for the South African side as they were looking for some quick runs. The visitors scored 206 runs in some quick time. AB de Villiers scored 51 runs and was the top scorer for the innings. Dilruwan Perera took 4 wickets in the innings. The home side had a target of 370 in sight. The fourth day ended with Sri Lanka placed well at 110/1. But the fifth day didn’t end up well and they were bowled out at a score of 216. Kumar Sangakkara top scored scoring 76 runs in the innings. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel took 4 wickets each to register their 1st win.

The second match of the series was played in the SSC ground at Colombo. The home side batted first in the match. Mahela Jayawardene scored 165 runs and was helped along by Angelo Mathews who scored 63 runs. Niroshan Dickwella scored 72 runs in the innings helping the home team reach a score of 421 runs. Dale Steyn, Jean-Paul Duminy and Vernon Philander took 2 wickets each. The visitors on the other hand had a terrible 1st innings. It was the captain Hashim Amla who scored 139 runs and took their team score to 282 runs. With the help of it the team had something left in the match. Dilruwan Perera took 5 wickets in the innings and Rangana Herath took 4 wickets.

In the second innings the home side scored 229 runs in a quick amount of time. Angelo Mathews and Kumar Sangakkara was the top scorer scoring 63 and 72 runs respectively. Morne Morkel took 4 wickets in the innings. The visitors almost lost the match but it was a matter of luck and determined approach that saved the game. The last saw some rain interruptions and hence the match was drawn with 2 wickets in hand. Thus the South Africans won the series by 1-0.
