Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad is one of the most dynamic teams of Indian Premier League. Based in Hyderabad, the team was founded in 2012 as a replacement of the previous city-based IPL team Deccan Chargers after the latter went bankrupt. Nicknamed as the “Orange Army”, Sunrisers Hyderabad debuted in the IPL in the year 2013 - the 6th season of the League. The 2016 IPL champs, SRH has always amazed the spectators and cricket lovers with stunning performances.

Backed by some of greats of both Indian and international cricket like Darren Sammy, Kumar Sangakkara and Quinton de Kock, Sunrisers Hyderabad reached straight to the playoffs in their debut season only. Then, since 2016, the team has always made to the Playoffs with glory. They were also the runner-up for the 2018 IPL season and are unanimously dubbed as one of the strongest contenders of the League. The team is especially known for its powerful bowling side. It’s to note here the new team retained a lot of power players from Deccan Chargers while commencing its journey in the Indian Premier League.

Sun RisersDavid Warner is the lead run-scorer for Sunrisers Hyderabad and has won the esteemed Orange Cap not once but thrice in the League (2015, 2017 as well as 2019). Bhuvneshwar Kumar has won the Purple Cap for being the lead wicket taker of the team.

At present, Kiwi national team skipper Kane Williamson is the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The head coaches of the squad are Tom Moody and Trevor Bayliss.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Past Performance in IPL T20

IPL 2013

Sunrisers Hyderabad debuted in the IPL with a winning strike winning the first two matches back-to-back, against Pune Warriors India and Royal Challengers Bangalore. They lost in the third match against Royal Challengers Bangalore but won the 4th match against Delhi Daredevils. Of the 16 matches played, the team won at 10 which is certainly quite a feat for a new team. They reached the Playoffs defeating Kolkata Knight Riders but lost to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator round. The team finished their maiden season in the IPL on the 4th position on the points table.

IPL 2014

In 2014 IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad retained two of its major players, Shikhar Dhawan and Dale Steyn. They also added many star players this time such as David Warner, Irfan Pathan, Amit Mishra, Darren Sammy, Ishant Sharma, Brendan Taylor, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and so on. Dhawan was endowed with the role of captain while Darren Sammy became the vice-captain. The team started the season with two losses against Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab. But they won their third match against Delhi Daredevils. However, they lost again to Chennai Super Kings. Of the 14 matches played, the team could only manage to win 6 matches. Unlike the previous year, they could not make it to the Playoffs and ended the season with 6th position on the points table.

IPL 2015

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s third season in the IPL was more or less the same as the second one. They started their stint with a loss in the first match against Chennai Super kings. But, they won the second match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Then, again they lost to Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredvils. They attained a win in the 5th match though against Kolkata Knight Riders. But, then SRH lost to Mumbai Indians in the following match. Of the 14 matches played, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to win in 7 games. They could not take to the Playoffs and had to leave the season in the 6th position. However, the only consolation was 2015 IPL Orange Cap winner was SH captain David Warner.

IPL 2016

The 9th season of IPL (4th for SRH) was undoubtedly the most special year for the Hyderabad team. It was the very year when the Orange Army lifted their maiden IPL trophy. The team started the season with two back-to-back losses against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. They finally achieved their first win of the season with the third match against Mumbai Indians. The Hyderabad team won the following two matches as well, against Gujarat Lions and Kings XI Punjab respectively. Of the 14 matches played in the group stage, they won in 8 of them. Upon reaching the Playoffs, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator Round. Next, they defeated Gujarat Lions in the second qualifier round to reach the final. In the final, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore to clinch their first ever IPL victory.

IPL 2017

In the 10th season of the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad released 6 players and retained 17 from their title-winning squad. Being the defending champs, SH was endowed with the privilege to host both the opening & closing ceremonies of the Indian Premier League that year. The team started the season with grand wins in the first two matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Lions. However, they lost the next two matches against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. But, the team bounced back and won the following matches against Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils. Of the 14 matches played, the squad managed to win in 8 of them. The team was able to reach the Playoffs defeating Gujarat Lions in their last match of the group stage games. However, the team lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator Round and finished the season on the 3rd position on the points table.

IPL 2018

The 11th season of the Indian Premier League was another great year for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team was able to reach the finals for the second time in the 2018 IPL after their winning stint in 2016. Unfortunately, they had to leave David Warner as he was banned from the League given ball-tampering controversies. Alex Hales was brought as a replacement for Warner. The Hyderabad team started the innings with as many as 3 hat trick wins against Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. But, they lost out on the 4th and 5th match against Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings. But, the team soon retained their winning spirit and went on to win the next 6 matches on a row against Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils again. The following three matches ended in a loss but the team made to the Playoffs. They lost to Chennai Super Kings in the first Qualifier but won the second Qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders and reached to the final. In the final match, they were defeated by Chennai Super Kings.

IPL 2019

In 2019 IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad released Dhawan and got in Abhishek Sharma, Vijan Shankar and Shahbaz Nadeem. The team further retained seventeen players and signed in Wriddhiman Saha, Martin Guptill and Jonny Bairstow. David Warner came back but this time Kane Williamson was declared as the captain. However, when Williamson was struck with an injury, Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the matches. The team started the 12th season (7th for them) of the Indian Premier League with a loss against Kolkata Knight Riders. But, SRH managed to win the next 3 matches against Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals. After that, they lost 3 matches on a row to Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals. However, SRH managed to win the following couple of matches against Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. The team went to the Playoffs but was defeated in the Eliminator round by Delhi Capitals.

IPL 2020

Sunrisers Hyderabad is the most consistent team of IPL ever. The team was led by David Warner. The team faced many injuries and their star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and frontline seam bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar were ruled out of IPL 2020 after playing only few games because of injury. The team got Jason Holder as replacement of M Marsh and Jason Holder impressed everyone with his performance. David Warner led the team from front and scored most runs for Hyderabad in IPL 2020. He scored most 548 runs for team. Manish Pandey was also outstanding for SRH. He was consistent with his performance. T Natarajan was a big positive for franchise in IPL 2020. He was so perfect with his Yorkers and he took second most wickets (16) for SRH in IPL 2020. He impressed everyone and recently he got chance to play for Indian team against Australia and he gave his best and impressed everyone in his debut series. SRH won 7 league games out of 14 and qualified for playoffs. They defeated RCB in eliminator match but they were defeated by Delhi Capitals in qualifier 2 and SRH finished the IPL 2020 season at 3rd place.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Team Captains

Sunrisers Hyderabad had two main captains in its maiden IPL season (2013)- Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White. Shikhar Dhawan also donned the role of skipper in some of the matches and he continued till 2014. Darren Sammy also led the team in some of the matches in 2014. David Warner was appointed as the captain in 2015 and he led them in following two seasons as well. In 2018, team selected Kane Williamson as the captain and he appointed as the skipper for the 2019 series as well. But, he left the team the same year due to injury issues and Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the team in 2019. Kane Williamson is the current captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad squad in 2020.

Located in the city of Hyderabad, the stadium spans across 16 acres of land and boasts a whooping capacity of 55,000. Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is owned and operated by Hyderabad Cricket Association.

David Warner

The winner of 3 Orange Caps in the IPL, David Warner is certainly one of the most significant pillars of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team. The star hitter has always been consistently phenomenal with his hits and is surely the evergreen favorite for the SRH fans.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

The Purple Cap winner is undoubtedly the best of bowling attacks the team has to offer. He has had also shown his potential as a captain in the 2019 season when Williamson had to step down due to injury. Kumar is in a strong form of late and speaks of great promise for the Hyderabad team.

Rashid Khan

The Afghan player is a killer with his spin attacks and he has proved his mettle as a solid match-winner for SRH already. Khan has been through some great spells lately and is in a smashing form of late. His presence in the team would do much to bolster the SRH bowling side to greater heights.
