Royal Challengers Bangalore is the Bangalore-based team in the Indian Premier League. The team has been a part of the original 8 franchises playing in the esteemed League since its inaugural season in 2008. RCB has often shown commendable power-play in the IPL and holds the record of the highest total (263/5) in IPL. Virat Kohli, the long-term captain of RCB, holds the record of scoring highest runs in IPL season (973 runs in 2016). Royal Challengers Bangalore IPL T20 Performance (year wise)
The Bangalore team didn’t really have a great start in the maiden season of the IPL. The team lost out on their first match against Kolkata Knight Riders. They won the second match though against Mumbai Indians thanks to Mark Boucher but again lost in three of the following matches against RR, CSK and DD. Again, they won their 6th match against Deccan chargers but started losing out on the following matches, one after the other. Of the 14 matches played, the RCB could only manage to win in 4 and finished at the 7th position on the points table.
The second season of the IPL was a great edition for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. They commenced the season with a solid win against Rajasthan Royals. However, they kept on losing out on matches after that Chennai Super Kings, Deccan Chargers, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils. In the latter half of the season, Anil Kumble took up the role of skipper as the previous captain Kevin Pietersen left and it proved to be a turning point for the team. Under Kumble’s able guidance, the team started winning matches one after the other like a boss. They finally reached the semi-final where they defeated Chennai Super Kings which paved the way for the final. Unfortunately, the Bangalore-team got defeated by Deccan Chargers in the final and could not lift the IPL trophy.
The 3rd season of the IPL was also somewhat of a great year for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. They lost their first match against Kolkata Knight Riders but went to win in the next 4 matches straight against Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. They lost two matches but again won the next match against Kings XI Punjab. By the end of the group stage, RCB was on tie with Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils but the former got through the Playoffs given higher run-rate. They made to the semi-final and met with Mumbai Indians but the latter got the better out of them and RCB had to leave the series with 3rd place on points table.
The Bangalore-squad began the 4th season of the League with a number of grand purchases, including the likes of Tilakratne Dilshan, Daniel Vettori, Ryan ten Doeschate, AB de Villiers, Dirk Nannes and Cheteshwar Pujara. However, when Nannes was injured, ace hitter Chris Gayle was brought as a replacement. The team began their season with a win against Kochi Tuskers Kerala. But, they lost in the next 3 matches and the 5th match ended up with no result. However, the team bounced back again under Vettori’s solid leadership and went on to win 7 matches on a row. Their incredible performance got them to Playoffs and they reached the semi-finals in full glory. At the second qualifying final, they defeated Mumbai Indians which took them right to the 4th IPL final. However, they lost out to Chennai Super Kings in the final and ended up as runner-up.
The 5th season of the IPL was not exactly a great year for the Bangalore team. They started the innings with a win against Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural match but then lost out in the 3 following matches against Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. They won again in the next 3 matches against Pune Warriors India, Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. The next match against Super Kings was abandoned and the team also lost to Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab in the following two matches. Of the 16 matches played, the team won at 8 and finished at the 5th position on the points table.
The 6th season the IPL was more or less a similar year for the Bangalore-based team. The team started their stint in the series with a win against Mumbai Indians and the second match against Sunrisers Hyderabad was a tie. Interestingly, the team’s third match was against the Hyderabad team as well and this time RCB won. The team also won the next match against Kolkata Knight Riders but lost to Chennai Super Kings in the 5th match. Of the 16 matches played, RCB won at 9 and finished at the 5th position on the points table.
RCB began the 2014 season with Virat Kohli as the new skipper of the team. Alongside, the team made a series of great purchases, such as Albie Morkel, Ravi Rampaul, Mitchell Starc, Nic Maddinson, Muttiah Muralitharan, Parthiv Patel and so on. And of course, the team also got Yuvraj Singh- the costliest for the season. Kohli’s boys commenced the 7th season of the Indian Premier League with two back-to-back wins against Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians. But, they lost out to Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab in the next 3 matches. The team, however, managed to secure a win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 6th match but again started to lose. The 2015 season was comparatively a better year for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. They began the season with a win against the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in their first match. But, they lost the next 3 matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. However, the team won the 5th and 6th matches against Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils. The next match ended up with no result but they won the following match against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, they lost out on the following match against Chennai Super Kings. Out of the 14 matches played, the team won at 7 of them and secured a place in the Playoffs. Upon reaching the Playoffs, RCB won the Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals but lost to Chennai Super Kings in the second Qualifier. They finished the League with 3rd position on the points table.
The 9th season of the Indian Premier League was another splendid year for the RCB as that was for the third time, the team could make a place in the final. The Bangalore team started the season with a smashing win against Sunrisers Hyderabad but lost out in the next two matches against Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians. Then, RCB won again against Rising Pune Supergiant. After that, the team started losing out on matches on a row. However, it bounced back and made it to the Playoffs successfully. In the Qualifier Round, they defeated Gujarat lions and made en entry to the IPL final. However, they were defeated in the final match by Sunrisers Hyderabad and ended up in the runners-up position.
The 2017 season was a poor season for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and they started the innings with a loss against defending champs Sunrisers Hyderabad. But, they won the second match against Delhi Daredevils yet lost the next 3 matches against Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant. The Bangalore-team won the following match against Gujarat Lions and after that started losing out on matches repeatedly. Of the 14 matches played, they could only win in 3.RCB ended the season with the last position on the points table.
The 2018 Indian Premier League was comparatively better for the Bangalore-based franchise. The team lost in their first season to Kolkata Knight Riders but won the second match against Kings XI Punjab. They lost again to Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians but won the 5th match against Delhi Daredevils. After that, the team started losing out on matches. Of the 14 matches played, they could only win 6 matches and finished on the 6th position on the points table.
The 12th season of IPL was another shattering year for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. They started the series with back-to-back losses in the first 6 matches and finally managed wins in 7th, 8th and 9th matches beating Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings. They lost the next match though. Of the 14 matches played, Royal Challengers Bangalore could only win in 5 of them and ended the series with the last position on the points table.

The first captain of the team was Rahul Dravid who led the team in 2008. The next captain for 2009 season was Kevin Pietersen but he soon left the left and Anil Kumble became the captain. Virat Kohli was also selected as the captain for some of the matches and he has remained the skipper of the team ever since.
