Both the openers of Lanka gave a very good start and had made 56 runs at the end of the first mandatory Powerplay. West Indies were looking for a breakthrough but did not get any success. Danushka Gunathilaka and Pathum Nissanka made an opening partnership of 95 runs in 10.1 overs and then, unfortunately, lost the first wicket of Pathum Nissanka as a run out by Bravo. After the dismissal, Dinesh Chandimal came to join Danushka Gunathilaka but could not stay longer and was sent back by Dwayne Bravo. After the first wicket, the Lanka batsmen struggled and could make only 160 runs only. West Indies got the target of 161 runs to win the 2nd T20 match of WI vs SL series 2021.

Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis were sent on the crease to chase the target and Akila Dananjaya got the responsibility to deliver the first over. SL got the nice start and dismissed Evin Lewis at the low score of 9 runs in 2.5 overs only. The first breakthrough was taken by Akila Dananjaya, who made a hattrick with the ball in the last game. At the end of the first mandatory Powerplay, WI had made 45 runs at the loss of 1 wicket.
