The 2nd or last test match of the series between India and New Zealand was held on February 29, Saturday at Hagley Oval, in New Zealand. New Zealand team was in lead with 1-0 in series, and it was a must-win match for the Indian side to draw or level the series. The captain of Indian team was Virat Kohli, while the captain of the Kiwi team was Kane Williamson. There were 2 changes in Indian side. All-rounder R Jadeja and fast bowler Umesh Yadav came in for Ashwin and Ishant Sharma. New Zealand team won the toss and elected to field first.

On batting first Indian openers made only 30 runs opening partnership. Mayank Aggarwal departed early with a score of just 7 runs. P Shaw and C Pujara scored 50 runs partnership for 2nd wicket. P Shaw played brilliant inning and scored 54 runs. C Pujara also scored 54 runs. Captain Kohli failed again to perform well and got out on just 3 runs. Hanuma Vihari scored the most 55 runs for Indian team, and India scored 242 runs in their 1st inning. K Jamieson took most 5 wickets for New Zealand team while Boult and Southee took 2 wickets each.

New Zealand's openers scored well and gave a perfect start to the team. They made an opening partnership of 66 runs. Tom Latham scored the most 52 runs for New Zealand. But no other Kiwi batsman was able to score good runs. K Jamieson also scored 49 runs and helped New Zealand to reach a total of 235 runs. India took lead of 7 runs, but in the 2nd inning, Indian batsmen were poorly failed to score good runs. Indian team got all out on just 124 runs, and it was a target of 12 runs for New Zealand team. T Boult took 4 wickets in 2nd innings while Southee took 3 wickets. New Zealand batsmen chased the target easily and won the match by 7 wickets, and K Jamieson was selected for the player of the match.
