The 42nd T20 BBL match of the Big Bash League 2020-21 was fought between Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne on 17 Jan 2021. Melbourne Renegades won the toss and they chose to bat first. Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh were sent to open for Renegades. Glenn Maxwell got the new ball in hand to open the attack.

That was an excellent opening for the Stars as they got the first wicket of Finch in the very first over and Renegades lost its captain at no run. After the dismissal, Sam Harper came to handle the situation with Shaun Marsh. After the end of the first mandatory Powerplay, Renegades were at the score of 32 runs at the loss of 1 wicket. Renegades completed the first 50 runs in the 6.6 overs. Shaun and Sam played well and had made a partnership of 78 runs. But Shaun Marsh was sent back by Stanlake in the 10th over. Another wicket of Jake Fraser-McGurk was fallen at the score of 85 runs. Two quick wickets brought the Renegades under pressure and Stars had back into the game. Mackenzie at the number 5 played some good shots but could not stay longer on the crease and made 29 runs. Sam Harper was still there but once again Billy Stanlake took the important wicket of Sam Harper for his team. After the dismissal of Harper, the whole team was bowled out at 150 runs in the 19.5 overs.

The Stars needed 151 runs to win the match from 120 balls. Liam Hatcher took 3 wickets of Renegades and Stanlake also took 2 important wickets. Andre Fletcher and Marcus Stoinis came to chase the target and Kane Richardson got the new ball. The Stars lost the first wicket of Fletcher at 25 runs in 3.5 overs. Then Nick Larkin came to join Stoinis and both handled the situation very well. The stars crossed 50 runs in 7.3 overs on the scoreboard. The Renegades wanted to break the partnership and Hatzoglou did the job. Stoinis was dismissed by Hatzoglou at the score of 65 runs. Maxwell and Larkin played well and made the target easy. Melbourne Stars easily achieved the target in 19.1 overs.

Melbourne Stars won the 42nd match of BBL 2020-21 by 6 wickets and Liam Hatcher was the Man of the Match.
