The 1st test match of the series between India and New Zealand was held on February 21, Friday at Basin Reserve Cricket Stadium, Wellington. Virat Kohli was the Indian team test skipper while New Zealand team was led by Kane Williamson. Both sides were looking very strong and had good quality test players. New Zealand team won the toss and decided to field first.

On batting first Indian side collapsed very early and could make a total of 165 runs only.  Test debutant Kyle Jamieson took the most 4 wickets in 1st inning for New Zealand. New Zealand Batsmen played brilliantly in 1st inning and put a massive total of 348 runs and dominated the match. They took a huge lead of 163 runs after 1st innings. Captain Williamson scored the most 89 runs while Jamieson scored 44 runs. Ishant Sharma for India took the most 5 wickets in the 1st inning. 

Indian batsmen could not perform well in the 2nd inning of the match also and could not handle the pressure. The team collapsed early and could make 191 runs only. They gave a target of only 9 runs to Kiwi players. Opener Mayank Aggarwal scored the most 58 runs for India in 2nd inning. Tim Southee showed his bowling class and experience and took 5 wickets. Left-arm seamer Boult also took 4 wickets.

New Zealand seam bowler Tim Southee was selected for the player of the match award for his 9 wickets in the match. The test match finished in 4 days only. Indian captain Virat Kohli praised the Kiwi team and looked disappointed with his individual as well as team performance and promised the press to fight back in the next or last match of the series. New Zealand captain looked satisfied with his team performance and congratulated mates for a win and lead in series by 1-0.
