The 1st test match of the 3 match Pakistan tour of England series was held from August 5 to 8 of 2020 at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. Joe Root was the captain of English team and Babar Azam was the captain of visiting team Pakistan.
Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. Pakistani opener Masood played brilliant inning of 156 runs in 1st inning and helped team Pakistan to score good runs. Pakistani skipper Babar Azam also showed his talent and played beautiful inning of 69 runs. Pakistan scored 326 runs in their 1st inning. Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer took 3 wickets each for England. England batting collapsed in their 1st inning on the score of 219. Ollie Pope scored 62 runs which was most for England. Pakistani leg spin bowler Yasir Shah took 4 wickets. It was looking very hard for English batsmen to play Yasir Shah.
In 2nd inning, England team showed why they are very good test team. English bowlers bowled well and all out Pakistan on just 169 runs. Stuart Broad took most 3 wickets in 2nd inning. It was a target of 277 runs for England. Captain Root scored 42 runs but the game changed by match winning partnership of 139 runs between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes. Wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler scored 75 runs while Chris Woakes played a not out inning of 84 runs. Yasir Shah took 4 wickets in 2nd inning too for Pakistan but unfortunately they could not win the match.
Chris Woakes was selected as player of the match for his brilliant match winning performance. England team took an early lead in the series while it was little disappointment for Pakistan to face defeat after such a wonderful game. Innings from Woakes and Buttler were recognised and praised by everyone and the Pakistani captain also appreciated their performance in post match interview.
