Wellington beat Otago to register their 1st win in the tournament - The 9th match of the Georgie Pie Super Smash Series was played in the Seddon Park in Hamilton. This was the last match to be played in the 2nd week of the tournament and was played between Wellington and Otago. Both the teams had failed to win a single match in the tournament so far and it was interesting to see which team emerged as winners in this match.

After winning the toss it was Otago who decided to bat first. The team got a good start batting first as Jesse Ryder and Michael Bracewell gave the team a good start in the match. They scored runs at a good pace and took the team score to a huge 86/2 in 8.2 overs. It was Ryder who lost his wicket after scoring 56 runs off just 25 balls. His innings gave a momentum to the teams batting line-up but they failed to convert this momentum into a huge score as the middle order failed to click on time. The good start was later converted into just a total of 169 runs. Bracewell scored 40 runs before losing his wicket in the 16th over of the game. Grant Elliot and Luke Woodcock took 2 wickets each in the match.

While chasing a tricky score of 170 the Wellington failed to get a good start. They managed to score only 61 runs in 10 overs losing 3 wickets in the process. The fall of wickets continued for them but the runs kept coming. In 15 overs they were able to reach a score of 107/5. At the end it was Grant Elliott and Jeetan Patel who made all the difference for the team as they scored 43 and 34 runs respectively to take their team cross the target with 2 balls remaining. The Wellington thus with this win registered their 1st win in the tournament.
