In the coming month of Dec-Jan in 2023-2024, Australia and Pakistan are all set to play 3 Tests matches in Australia. Pakistan cricket board has already declared that they will go to Australia at the end of this year 2023 for contesting a bilateral Australia vs Pakistan test series 2023-24. This Aus vs Pak test series 2023-24 will be associated with the ICC World Test Championship for the 2023-2025 season.
All three test matches of the series will be held in three different stadiums located in Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Test series will commence with the 1st test which will be played from 14–18 December 2023 at Perth Stadium, Perth, then both teams will move to Melbourne for contesting the 2nd test at Melbourne Cricket Ground from 26–30 December 2023. Ultimately, the last test of the series will be held from 3–7 January 2024 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
The previous test series between Australia and Pakistan in Australia was played in 2019 where Pakistan lost the 2 test matches series by 2-0. Since 1956, Pakistan has visited Australia 13 times but has never been able to win a single test series in Australia. The last series between both nations was played in 2021-22 when Australia came to Pakistan for a 3-test series where Australia captured the series by 1-0.
Currently, Babar Azam is holding the captaincy of the Pakistan team in all formats so most probably, the Pakistani team will visit Australia under his leadership. On the other hand, Pat Cummins has been appointed as the captain of the Australian squad in all formats so he will be seen in the lead role of skipper for Australia. In terms of ICC ranking, Australia is sitting at the top position while Pakistan is in the 6th place on the list.
In terms of head-to-head in test cricket, Australia and Pakistan came against each other on 69 occasions where Pakistan could win only 15 matches while losing 34 matches with 20 matches ending as drawn.
Overall, as of June 2023, Pakistan has taken part in 451 tests where they defeated their opponent in 146 matches and lost 139 matches, on the other hand, Australia has appeared in 853 tests where they emerged victorious on 405 occasions and faced defeat on 229 occasions.
So, it would be interesting to watch how Pakistan will perform on the overseas pitches and what tactics will they adopt to win their first test series against the Aussies in Australia.
