One of the most loved of all IPL teams, Chennai Super kings has always been one of the strongest contenders in Indian Premier League ever since its inception. The Chennai-based team is based in the city of Chennai and was founded back in 2008. Under the able leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK has had always put up a commendable performance, winning the championship four times. In fact, Dhoni’s team boasts the best winning percentage (61.28) among all the IPL teams.

Chennai Super Kings also holds the record of maximum appearances both in playoffs (11) as well as the Final (9). It’s to stress here, CSK is the sole team in IPL to secure a berth consistently in every edition during their appearance in Indian Premier League.

CSK’s brand value is a whopping 732 crore INR (104 million USD). As of now, its Indian Premier League’s second-most valuable franchise.

Chennai Super Kings has consistently maintained a dominant position on the points table in each IPL edition the team has had attended. As per the reports of Brand Finance, CSK was the best valuable brand after 2018 IPL with a net worth of 65 USD. It was also dubbed as the “best valuable IPL team” in 2010-11 IPL. It’s true that the team had a tryst with legal dispute which led to its suspension in IPL 2016 and 2017 but the team made a glorious comeback in 2018 with its 3rd win.

At present, Stephen Fleming is the head coach of the team while Michael Hussey and Lakshmipathy Balaji are the batting and bowling coaches respectively.

Chennai Super Kings Past performances year-wise

IPL 2008

Chennai Super Kings started off their maiden IPL innings with a grand win against Punjab Kings that set the record of highest total (240/5)  in any IPL tournament. The team itself broke that very record in 2010.  Among many star players such as Michael Hussey, Muttiah Muralitharan and Stephen Fleming, the team bagged the most expensive player of the first IPL auction- Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Under Dhoni’s leadership, the team played 16 matches in total of which they won in 9 matches. CSK reached to the play-offs in the 3rd position and also secured a berth in IPL final where they were defeated by Rajasthan Royals.

IPL 2009

The Chennai team again bagged the highest-paid cricketer (Andrew Flintoff) of the second IPL in the 2019 season of the tournament. Fleming took over the coaching responsibilities of the team from this season while Dhoni maintained his position as the team skipper. In the 2019 season, the team played 15 matches in total of which they won in 8 matches. CSK entered the Playoffs with seventeen points and finished at the semi-finals. Matthew Hayden, the star opener of the team, was the best run-scorer of the 2019 IPL season and was awarded with the honorable Orange Cap.

IPL 2010

The 2010 IPL season will always be extremely special for CSK as the season got the team their first ever IPL win. It’s true that the Super Kings had a tough time in the season initially but players like Doug Bollinger, Suresh Raina, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ravichandran Ashwin saved the day for the team in different matches over the season. CSK played 16 matches in total in 2010 season of which the team won in 9 matches. Dhoni and his boys entered the Playoffs with 14 points and won the cup beating Mumbai Indians at the final. The 2010 IPL win also helped the team to secure a place in Champions League T20 2010.

IPL 2011

The defending champ of 2011 IPL was also the  winning champion of 2011 IPL. Yes, the 4th season of Indian Premier League brought the second win for the Chennai-based team. CSK had a struggling phase in the initial stages of the 2011 season and even plummeted to the lower ranks at the points table given concurrent losses. But, the team bounced back winning 7 of next 8 games which took them to the 2nd position and straight to knockout stage. Interestingly, Dhoni and his boys faced the very same opponent (Royal Challengers Bangalore) in both Qualifying final and final whom they defeated in both the matches to seal their 2nd IPL win. The 2011 IPL is also the season where CSK triumphed at all the home games and became the first team in the League to accomplish that feat.

IPL 2012

Chennai Super Kings began their 2012 IPL season with new inclusion of star all-rounder (Indian) Ravindra Jadeja. The team started slow but just when everyone was skeptical about their entry in final 4, CSK won 3 of 4 matches and secured a place in Playoffs. They beat Mumbai Indians in Eliminator round but got defeated in Qualifying Final by Delhi Daredevils. However, CSK was able to reach the final to face Kolkata Knight Riders but a valiant fight from the latter prevented the team from scoring a hat-trick win record at the IPL.

IPL 2013

CSK initiated the 2013 season with new sign-up of 5 Indian and 5 overseas bowlers. They had a fantastic start right from the first match and it was the first season where the team shot up at the top position of the points table. Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians in first Qualifier only to face the very same opponent in the 2013 IPL final. But, unfortunately, the team lost to the Mumbai team in the final. However, two of its players, Michael Hussey and Dwayne Bravo, won the Orange Cap and Purple Cap respectively.

IPL 2014

Chennai Super Kings began their 7th season in IPL with the purchase of some the best players of the world cricket. Those include the likes of Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Faf du Pleiss, Mohit Sharma and so on. Although the team began the IPL edition with a defeat yet they soon turned the game in their favor by winning 8 of the 9 next matches and finished at the top position on points table. After getting into the Playoffs, they defeated Mumbai Indians in Eliminator but lost to Punjab Kings in Qualifier round.  It’s to note here, due to some dispute, CSK’s home venue for 2014 season was JSCA International Stadium.

IPL 2015

In the 2015 season, Chennai Super Kings got back Michael Hussey and also retained Dhoni, Jadeja and Raina. The team played 17 matches in total in the season of which they won 10 matches. This season too marked a fantastic edition for Dhoni and his team as they fought their way to the final. But, unfortunately, the team again lost to Mumbai Indians and ended up in the Runner-up position.

IPL 2016

The team was under suspension as per the orders of Supreme Court on the ground of betting charges and could not play in 2016 IPL season.

IPL 2017

Chennai Super Kings was under 2-year suspension order and could not play 2017 IPL.

IPL 2018

The 2018 season marked a comeback for Chennai Super Kings after its 2-year ban from the IPL. CSK began the innings with a line of new buys from the Indian cricket zone, including Irfan Pathan, Ankush Bains, Rahul Sharma and so on. Dhoni and his boys started off the comeback season with a commendable victory against Mumbai Indians. It was then followed by their first home win of the season against KKR. Over the season, Chennai Super Kings played 16 matches of which they won 11 matches. After reaching the playoffs, CSK seized 2 wins on a row against Sunrisers Hyderabad both in Qualifier and final that led them to their 3rd IPL win. 

IPL 2019

The Chennai team commenced the 2019 season with a great start and was also the first IPL team to secure a berth in the playoffs of the season. Over the season, the team had played 17 matches and won in 10 of them. They reached the final in full glory to meet Mumbai Indians but lost the match for just 1 run. However, CSK’s Imran Tahir was the star bowler for the 2019 IPL season and was awarded with Purple Cup for bagging maximum wickets.

IPL 2020

Chennai Super Kings was captained by MS Dhoni in IPL 2020. Since its inception this team has shown great consistency in tournament which was missing in 2020. Although players and captain tried hard to improve the game in each match, the form for which it is known has been missing all the time which made critics and experts surprised. Unavailability of Suresh Raina costs very much for CSK team fans and franchise. The team struggled to win matches initially of the tournament but in second half of the tournament, the team played like vintage Chennai team. Faf du Plessis was brilliant with bat and scored most runs for CSK in IPL 2020. The big positive for CSK in IPL 2020 was Sam Curran. Sam Curran gave his best for team. Whether with ball or with bat, Sam Curran emerged as one of the most important Chennai player in IPL 2020. Sam Curran took most 13 wickets for CSK and also scored 186 runs with strike rate of 132 in IPL 2020. CSK managed to win 6 league matches out of 14 and finished at second last position on points table. 

Official Home Venue

The official home venue of Chennai Super Kings is the esteemed M.A. Chidambaram Stadium a.k.a. The Chepauk (Chennai). Named after erstwhile BCCI President, the stadium stands tall as the oldest of cricket stadiums in India which still actively hosts matches. Boasting a huge seating capacity of 50,000 matches, the stadium is under the ownership of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Often dubbed as “Fortress Chepauk”, the stadium has had witnessed 67.44 percent winning record for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL seasons since 2008. In 2011 IPL, CSK won all their home matches in Chepauk as well as the final winning match against RCB.

Team Owner

Chennai Super Kings is owned by India Cements since its inception in 2008. The cement manufacturing giant bought the team for a grand 91 million USD. N. Srinivasan, the erstwhile ICC Chairman who was also the managing director and vice-chairman of India Cements- was the de facto owner of CSK. But, after the 2015 legal dispute, the franchisee has been transferred into a separate distinct entity named Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd., as per orders from the honorable Supreme Court.

Chennai Super Kings Winning History

CSK has won 4 IPL titles in total.

The team had their first IPL win in 2010 by defeating Mumbai Indians.

They won their second win the very next season in 2011 IPL by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The third win of the team came with its comeback season in 2018 where they won the season by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The fourth win of CSK came in 2021 by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

Ravindra Jadeja
