Highest 5th Wicket Partnership in Test

In the history of test cricket, lots of big partnerships have been made over the ages but there has been only one instance when a team successfully built quadruple century partnership for the 5th wicket. And that too came in the year 1946; around seven decades back, when the legendary Aussie batting pair of Sir Donald Bradman and Sid Barnes piled a huge 405-run stand for the 5th wicket against England. Nevertheless, Australia have always maintained their stronghold for the fifth wicket partnership featuring in 5 out of top 10 highest partnerships of all time for the 5th wicket.

Most Recently, Zak Crawley and Jos Buttler created history to become the first pair to score 300+ runs for the fifth wicket partnership for England in Test cricket history.[3rd Test Match, England vs Pakistan August 2020]

Statistically, a four hundred run stand for the 5th wicket has been recorded only once and it’s still a world record. However, triple century partnerships for this wicket have been registered for a total of 11 times. India managed to feature in 3 of them. Out of these three triple century partnerships, the legendary batting duo of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, featured two of them. While in another match, Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly contributed 300-run stand against the arch rival Pakistan in 2007.

The South African batting pair of AB de Villiers and Graeme Smith recorded a brilliant 338-run stand against Pakistan in Dubai in 2013 and this was the last time any pair put as much runs for this wicket. From India’s point of view, the mammoth 376-run stand for the fifth wicket against Australia in 2001 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens is the highest ever stand recorded by any Indian pair in test matches for this wicket.
