Highest 4th Wicket Partnership in ODI

In many ODI matches we see that a team fights back despite the loss of three wickets at cheap scores. The sheer determination and ability to play well against the spin and part-time bowlers in the middle overs are the two important traits that every middle order batsman should have. It enhances the prospect of forging a huge partnership for the fourth wicket for the team to put a strong total on the scoreboard. However, not all teams have such magnificent middle order batsmen who would build a huge partnership for the team.

In the history of ODI cricket, batting pairs have recorded 200 or more runs for the fourth wicket a total of 17 times. But interestingly, Sri Lanka have never been able to score 200 or more runs for the fourth wicket despite their starry middle order batting line up including the likes of Arvinda De Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga, Sangakkara, Russel Arnold and others in the 50-over format over the last two decades.

In that regards, India are luckier. They repeated this feat thrice. The batting duo of Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja forged a huge unbeaten 275-run-partnership for the fourth wicket at a match against Australia in 1998. Until now, this is the highest 4th wicket partnership and the record is still intact. On the other hand, another Indian pair of Yuvraj Singh and VVS Laxman piled 213-run for the 4th wicket in 2004 at a match against Australia. Most Recently, Yuvraj Singh again with MS Dhoni scored 256 runs for the 4th wicket which is second highest till now at Cuttack.

South African batsmen Jonty Rhodes and Daryll Cullinan deserved to be credited for having recorded 200 plus run partnership for this wicket for the first time ever. In an ODI match against Pakistan in Nairobi, the right handed duo forged a huge 232 run partnership for the 4th wicket in 1996. Thereafter, 200 or more runs have been recorded quite a number of times in ODI cricket for the 4th wicket. The year 2004 saw three 4th wicket partnerships for 200 or more runs. However, the period 2010 to 2013 saw no double century partnership for this wicket in ODI history.
