Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales were sent to open for Sidney Thunder and Jackson Bird got the new ball in hand.

Both the openers of Thunder gave a good start and had made quick 44 runs for the first wicket partnership. Usman Khawaja was sent back by Jackson Bird in the 4th over. Sydney had made 47 runs for 1 wicket at the end of the mandatory Powerplay. Callum Ferguson, Sam Billings, and Alex Ross could not stay longer on the crease. But Daniel Sams played a superb inning of 50 runs off 37 balls. Opening batsman Alex Hales also added important 54 runs to the scoreboard. The Sixers started the chase very well and scored 41 runs for no loss at the end of the first Powerplay (reduced to 3 overs).
