It was the 4th match of IPL 2020 which was played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on 22 September 2020. MS Dhoni, Captain of CSK, won the toss and chose to field first. From Rajasthan Royals, Y Jaiswal and S Smith opened the inning.

However, the beginning of the RR inning was not that good as they lost their first wicket in third over in the form of Jaiswal who got out at an individual score of 6 runs only. S Samson joined Smith, and soon they both started big shots, and CSK was placed on backfoot. S Samson played a brilliant inning. He made 74 runs in 32 balls, and Smith also completed his half-century. However, after the fall of the wicket of S Samson D Miller joined the inning but got out on zero. No other batsmen could do well against the bowling attack of CSK. However, Smith played a captain's inning and made 69 runs in 47 balls. J Archer also played well in last overs. He made not out 27 runs in 8 balls and led the team to a better score. RR made a total of 216 runs in 20 overs at the loss of 7 wickets. S Curran was the most successful bowler from CSK who got 2 wickets.

In the second inning Chennai Super Kings openers M Vijay and S Watson provided an excellent start to the team. They made a partnership of 56 runs before the fall of the wicket of M Vijay. M Vijay made 21 runs, and S Watson made 33 runs. After fall of the first wicket, Faf du Plessis came for batting and hit good shots. He played quality cricket and made 72 runs in only 37 balls. Other than du Plessis no other batsmen could show his talent. Although S Curran and K Jadhav tried well, they could not lead the team to a better score. In the last overs, the required run rate for CSK was increased much, and MS Dhoni tried well to have more runs by hitting big shots. However, the team CSK fall short of 17 runs to win and could make only 200 runs at a loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs.

With this victory team, RR has begun the journey with a winning note in IPL 2020. S Samson was awarded as the man of the match for his brilliant inning of 74 runs that laid down the foundation of team RR's victory.
