It was the fifth match of IPL 2020 where KKR and Mumbai Indians countered each other at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Dubai on 23 September 2020. Both these teams are IPL winner, and hence the match was expected to be a high-voltage game. Both teams hold experienced and quality players who hold the capacity to change the game in almost no time. KKR captain D Karthik won the toss and chose to field first.

From MI Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Cock opened the inning but unfortunately, they failed to give an excellent start as de Cock got out in the second over only when the team was at the score of 8 runs. S Yadav joined captain to carry the inning forward, and both these batsmen played great innings. S Yadav made 47 runs in 28 balls while playing captain inning R Sharma made 80 runs in 54 balls. Other batsmen also tried to have a good score, and at the end of 20 overs, the MI team made a score of 195 at the loss of 5 wickets. From KKR Shivam Mawi got the most 2 wickets. To win the match, KKR was given the target of 196 runs. 

In the second inning, the KKR openers S Gill and S Narine started to chase the target, but in the third over only, they lost their first wicket in the form of S Gill. D Karthik, captain of KKR team, joined S Narine to meet the challenge but again S Narine also got out at an individual score of 9 runs. The bowling attack of MI was almost irresistible for the KKR batsmen, and none of the batsmen could do well. Karthik and Cummins made 30 and 33, respectively. Hence KKR made only 146 runs in their 20 overs at a loss of 9 wickets. From MI side T Boult, J Pattinson, J Bumrah and R Chahar displayed quality bowling and gained 2 wickets each. K Pollard also got 1 wicket.

Hence MI won the match by 49 runs, and KKR opened the season with a defeat. The MI captain R Sharma was awarded player of the match for his excellent batting performance that laid the foundation for victory. Sharma was happy with the performance of the teammates and appreciated all players. Karthik was also optimistic for next game as they also tried to do well in the match but somehow failed.
