Rain helps New Zealand win the match easily - New Zealand met West Indies in the first twenty 20 international match of the tour. In the first match the visiting team won the toss and decided to field first. The decision of bowling first was proved correct by the bowlers. The first wicket of West Indies fell in the 2nd over of the match. The very next over saw the departure of Dwayne Smith. It was Andre Fletcher and Darren Bravo who managed to control the falling pieces for his team. Both the batsmen took the team to a score of 98 when Bravo departed scoring 30 runs. Just after scoring 6 more runs Fletcher too lost his wicket scoring 52 runs. It was the fall of this wicket that the West Indies team lost wickets continuously and scored only 132 runs in 18 overs. Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Corey Anderson were the bowlers who managed to take two wickets each. It was these bowlers who managed to control the flow of runs.

The New Zealanders while chasing the target of 132 runs in 18 overs didn’t have a good start. They lost the first wicket pretty early in the 2nd over itself. Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum managed to stitch a partnership together but it was broken soon in the 9th over of the match at the score of 65. McCullum too lost his wicket in the 13th over and New Zealand was on 95/3. The home side yet again got success in the 15th over bringing the visitors to a score of 115/4. The match was headed for a close finish but the rain played a spoil sport. The West Indies lost the match because of the D/L method by 12 runs. Darren Sammy was the top wicket taker for the home side taking 3 wickets. With this win the New Zealanders takes a 1-0 lead in the two match T20 International series.
