The Welsh Fire is one of the 8 sides in The Hundred cricket event, and they are gearing up to fight in the 100 ball competition in 2023. The cricket authority of England launched the squad in 2019 to represent the aged provinces of Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, and Somerset in England. In the last edition of The Hundred, Welsh Fire stood at the number 8th position. The Welsh Fire will compete in a total of 8 matches in the 100-ball cricket tournament in 2023, with their first match taking place at Sophia Gardens on August 2nd against the Manchester Originals and their final league game taking place at Headingley Stadium on August 22nd against Northern Superchargers.

Welsh Fire Squad for The Hundred 2023

The franchise has included Glenn Phillips, David Willey, and Jonny Bairstow as their star batters whereas Shaheen Afridi and David Payne added to provide added benefits to the bowling department. Roelof van der Merwe and David Willey are important picks for the Fire as an all-rounder.

They have included three overseas talents named Glenn Phillips from New Zealand, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf from Pakistan. Luke Wells and Chris Cooke are both included on the basis of Wildcard.

Welsh Fire Squad in The Hundred 2022

Jonny Bairstow, the wicketkeeper-batsman of the English team, will take command of the Welsh Fire. Bairstow is one of the most powerful hitters of the ball who have plenty of experience in the shortest format of the game and have made more than 1100 runs in the T20I.

Welsh Fire Home Ground 

Sophia Gardens which is situated in Cardiff has been assigned as a home ground for Welsh Fire to play their home matches. Currently, the stadium is owned by Cardiff City Council and it has the capacity to accommodate 15,000 people. The Sophia Gardens will host all 4 home matches of the Fire on 2nd Aug, 12th Aug, 14th Aug, and 20th Aug 2023.

The stadium is an international test match venue and had its first Test in 2009. The stadium also hosts ODI and T20 matches. Sophia gardens had its first ODI in 1999 and first T20 in 2010. The stadium holds a capacity of 15,643 spectators.  Sophia Gardens is owned by Cardiff City Council.

Welsh Fire Team Captain and Coach

The team will enter the competition under the captaincy of an English first-class cricketer, Tom Abell.

Michael Hussey, the former Australian cricketer, has been appointed as the head coach of Welsh Fire.

Gary Kirsten, a former South African opening batsman, had the responsibility of the coach for Welsh in 2022. The suave opener has played 185 ODIs and 101 Test matches. As a coach, Kirsten has coached the Indian national cricket team from 2008 to 2011. He has also been the coach of South African national cricket team from 2011 to 2013.

Previous Performance of Welsh Fire in 2022

In the previous season of The Hundred in 2022, Welsh Fire had a really tough time. They couldn't win a single match and ended up in the last position on the points table. But now, with a new captain leading the team, their fans are hopeful for a better performance in the upcoming season.

Welsh Fire Record in The Hundred 2021

The Welsh Fire squad played a total of eight matches in 2021, winning three and losing five, putting them in the second-to-last position in the points or rank table.

The Welsh Fire's highest score was 173 runs in 2021, and they scored a total of 1148 runs at an average of 143.5 in all eight matches. During the whole season, the team took a total of 37 wickets at an average of 33.2. In terms of fielding, the Welsh Fire's fielders made 29 catches and one run out.
