The first one-day international match of the bilateral series between West Indies and Sri Lanka 2021 was played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on 10 March 2021. That was the first one-day international after defeating the SL in the T20I series by 2-1. The Lankan captain, Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and decided to have the bat in hand first. Bandara and Nissanka were playing their first ODI for Sri Lanka. Danushka Gunathilaka and Dimuth Karunaratne were on the crease and Alzarri Joseph got the new ball in hand to open the attack.

Sri Lanka team got a nice start and had made 57 runs without losing any wicket at the end of the first mandatory Powerplay. Both the openers of the SL played well and completed the first 100 runs in 18.3 overs. West Indies were looking for the breakthrough and the job was completed by the WI captain Kieron Pollard in the 19.2 overs. He took the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne at the score of 105 runs. SL got the opening partnership of 105 runs but after the dismissal of their captain, the batsmen Danushka Gunathilaka was also given out by the third umpire because of obstructing the field. Afterward, the Lanka batsmen struggled with the bat and started losing their wickets at regular intervals. Dimuth Karunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka had made 52 and 55 runs for their team. Ashen Bandara at the number 6 position also tried well and contributed 50 runs in his debut match. Finally, the Lanka team was bowled out at a total of 232 runs in 49 overs. Three batsmen, Danushka Gunathilaka, Pathum Nissanka, and Angelo Mathews were given run out and that stopped them to make a big total. West Indies got the target of 233 runs from 50 overs to win the match.

Evin Lewis and Shai Hope were sent out to the middle to chase the target and Nuwan Pradeep got the responsibility of the new ball. Both the openers of the West Indies gave a wonderful start and had made an opening partnership of 143 runs and dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers. The Lanka bowlers got the first breakthrough of Evin Lewis in 28.2 overs but that could not help them much and Shai Hope performed very well and made 110 runs for his team. His match-winning innings of 110 runs helped the WI to achieve the target very comfortably in 47 overs at the loss of 2 wickets and Shai Hope also completed his 10th ODI century in that match.

West Indies won the 1st ODI of the WI vs SL 2021 series by 8 wickets and Shai Hope was named Man of the Match.
