Sri Lanka vs West Indies ODI Series 2020


A One Day International series between Sri Lanka and West Indies cricket team was held in February 2020 in Sri Lanka. The series composed of 3 matches.

The tour began with the first match in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on February 22, Saturday.  Sri Lankan team was lead by batsman Karunaratne while Kieron Pollard was the captain of West Indies team. Both the teams had quality, and explosive ODI players and good cricket was expected from both sides. It was considered as an interesting series.

In the first match of series, both the teams dominated over each other, but Sri Lankan team won the match very closely and took an early lead. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field. On batting first, West Indies team played well and scored 289 runs. S Hope scored a century in this match and made 115 runs. On chasing 290, Sri Lankan openers gave brilliant start to the team, and both the openers scored a half-century and helped the team to reach the target. Captain Karunaratne scored 52 runs while Fernando scored 50 runs. Sri Lankan batsmen played good cricket and helped the team to chase the target, and Sri Lanka won the game by 1 wicket. In the post-match presentation, the Sri Lankan skipper congratulated and motivated the other players of the team. On the other end, West Indies captain looked disappointed with the performance of the team and promised to fight back in 2nd match.

The 2nd match of the series was played at Mahindra Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota, on February 26, Thursday. The ground was small, and it was a must-win match for West Indies team, while Sri Lanka had a chance to seal the series by winning this match. Therefore this was the most crucial match of the series. West Indies captain won the toss and decided to field first. Sri Lankan team lost 2 early wickets in just 9 runs, but then Fernando and Mendis made a partnership of 239 runs for 3rd wicket and balanced the inning. Fernando scored 127 runs while Mendis scored 119 runs and helped Sri Lankan team to get a total of big 345 runs. West Indies batting collapsed badly under pressure and got all out on just 184 runs in just 40 overs. S Hope scored the most 51 runs for West Indies. Sri Lanka won the game and sealed the series. Fernando was selected as the player of the match for a brilliant match-winning ton.  

The 3rd or last match of the series was held on March 1, Sunday, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. This was the final match of series, and Sri Lankan team won the toss and elected to bat first. Both openers made a brilliant 60 runs partnership for 1st wicket. Mendis scored the most 55 runs and helped the team to get 307 runs total. On chasing, West Indies top- order played brilliantly, and top 3 batsmen scored a half-century, but middle and lower order collapsed, and West Indies left 7 runs short to target. They made 301 runs. Sri Lanka won the series by 3-0.

Angelo Mathews was man of the match in the last match of series.
