India vs Sri Lanka ODI Series 2014 Schedule

After the West Indies team calling their Indian tour off after playing 4 ODI’s it was Sri Lanka who came into filling the gap that was made in the Indian calendar. The two nations were to fight for the Micromax cup over the 5 ODI matches. In all aspects the series had the potential of being a cracker as both the best teams of sub-continent were to fight against each other.

The 1st ODI was played in Cuttack. It was a match that was dominated by the Indian openers Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan. They together put up 231 runs scoring 111 and 113 respectively. Suresh Raina too scored some 50 odd runs as India cruised to a 1st innings total of 363 runs. Sri Lanka on the other hand proved to be an anti-climax as they were bowled out by the Indian bowling brigade at 194. Ishant Sharma was the real hero taking 4 wickets in the match to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The 2nd ODI of the series was played at Motera in Ahmedabad. Sri Lanka batting first started off pretty low as they lost too many wickets early. Kumar Sangakkara scored 61 runs and was well accompanied by Angelo Mathews who scored 92 runs to take his team to a total of 274 in the 1st innings. This score was quite easily chased by the inform Indian batting line-up. Shikhar Dhawan continued his good run as he scored 79 runs while Ambati Rayudu scored his 1st maiden century scoring 121 runs. Virat Kohli too contributed in the middle scoring 49 runs. Indian chased down the target in just 45 overs thus leading the series 2-0.

In the 3rd ODI the Sri Lankans decided to bat first after winning the toss but once again failed to get a good start. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene were the two exceptions who scored some runs for the team. They scored 53 and 118 respectively to take the team to a total of 242 runs. Umesh Yadav took 4 wickets in the match. It was a low total for an inform team and rightly so Indians chased down the score in just 44.1 overs. Shikhar Dhawan scored 91 runs while the captain Virat Kohli too scored 53 runs to take his team 3-0 up in the series.

The 4th ODI was played in Kolkata and marked the comeback match for Rohit Sharma. His romance with the ground continued as here he created a record of becoming the first batsman to score 2 double hundreds in ODI. He single handedly tore apart the Sri Lankan bowling scoring 264 runs. Virat Kohli too silently scored 66 runs as Indians put up a score of 404 runs on board while batting first. It was much of an ask for the visitors as they were bowled out at 251 runs. Angelo Mathews scored 75 runs while Lahiru Thirimanne scored 59 runs in the match. Indians registered a win of 153 runs to go 4-0 up in the 5 match series.

The 5th and the final ODI was to be played at Ranchi. Here Sri Lankans batted first and scored 286 runs. Mathews was the man for the game as he scored 139 runs well accompanied by Lahiru Thirimanne as he scored 52 runs. Dhawal Kulkarni took 3 wickets for India. In reply to this Indian Captain Virat Kohli structured a great innings scoring 139 runs. He chased down the score comfortably thus completing the whitewash as Indians won the series 5-0. The Micromax cup was lifted by the Indians and Virat Kohli was named as the Man of the series.
